The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office started the STAR (Sheriff’s Teaching Abuse Resistance) Program in January 2022. The Program allows School Resource Officers who are assigned to an elementary school the ability to teach a 6-week lesson plan to 5th grade students at the school. The lessons consist of good citizenship, good decision making, consequences of alcohol, illegal drugs and prescription drugs, bullying and responsible behavior using electronic means.

During the summer, The Sheriff’s Office hosts the STAR programs summer camp which consists of a week’s worth of fun activities and tours for the students. 400 fifth graders are selected to attend the camp based off their performance in the STAR program which is taught during the school year. Also, the camp utilizes 9th grade student volunteers to participate as Counselors to the younger students. These counselors assist School Resource Officers throughout the week and allows them the opportunity to learn about law enforcement and become a mentor to the younger children. Any 9th – 12th graders interested in volunteering as a camp counselor should contact their School Resource Officer.
